AQA has taken a unilateral decision to scrap the A-level in Polish from 2018. Are you going to lobby the AQA to reverse their decision? If yes, are there any other actions which you would undertake in order to preserve the Polish A-level?!

I was very worried to hear about AQA’s plans to axe Polish from A-level and GCSE exams. Polish is currently the second language spoken in the UK after English, and the number of students taking Polish A-Levels has increased by 1000% over the last decade. Our education system should embrace and meet this growing demand, rather than scrap the exams. That is why I am very pleased to say that my colleague Tristram Hunt, Labour’s Shadow Education Secretary, has committed to reversing this decision if Labour is successful in next week’s elections.

Poland was the most loyal ally of Britain in the Second World War. Would you support a ban on British media falsely labelling the German concentration and death camps as being “Polish” e.g. Polish ghetto, death camps of Poland, or, Poland’s Auschwitz?

I agree with you that it is very unfortunate and factually misleading that some British media have used false terms such as “Polish ghettos” or “Polish death camps” when referring to Nazi concentration camps in occupied Poland. While politicians in the UK don’t control the media, I agree this should not just be dismissed as lazy journalism. I recognize the power of such labels in the media to unfairly misrepresent and distort the historical truth about some of the most horrific crimes perpetrated in the 20th century. Poland was Britain’s loyal ally during the Second World War and I can understand how offensive this must be to Polish people.

Do you support promoting information about the positive contribution of Polish immigrants to the economy of the UK?

I absolutely appreciate the fantastic contribution Polish immigrants make to our economy and society. I see this every day in the Polish community in Leicester West, and my Polish assistant – who’s from Szczecin – certainly works very hard helping me respond to the hundreds of emails and letters I receive from my constituents!

In the event of Brexit, would you support granting an unconditional Indefinite Leave To Remain to the EU citizens who have lived and worked in Britain under the freedom of movement rules?

In terms of ‘Brexit’, I think that leaving the European Union would be disastrous for our country. Labour is a pro-European party and we are very much opposed to Britain exiting the EU.

If you were to be elected to the Parliament, would you join and support the activities of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Poland?

If I am re-elected as MP for Leicester West in tomorrow’s elections I remain committed to focusing on improving the NHS and care for older people, so the pressures on my diary will may not allow me to commit to being a member of an All-Party Group. However, I hope the APPG on Poland continues to highlight the important contribution Polish people make to our country and any issues Polish community might be concerned about.
