AQA has taken a unilateral decision to scrap the A-level in Polish from 2018. Are you going to lobby the AQA to reverse their decision? If yes, are there any other actions which you would undertake in order to preserve the Polish A-level?!
Commitment to Polish GCSE and A-Levels. It is vital that all young people master English, but we also believe that young people should engage with and study other languages as well – in particular in their mother tongue or that of their parents and family. That’s why we are making a clear commitment that the next Conservative Government will guarantee the future of GCSEs and A-levels in Polish, as well as other languages like Gujarati, Panjabi, Bengali and Turkish. Nicky Morgan, the Secretary of State for Education, has written to the exam boards calling on them to secure the future of these qualifications and reverse their decision to cancel them.
Importance of modern languages. We are including modern languages as part of our EBacc qualification because we know how important it is that students study languages as part of a broad curriculum that universities and employers value. Labour didn’t value the importance of studying languages, removing the requirement to study them, and as a result, 200,000 fewer GCSE students studied a modern language in 2010 than in 2002. Since we have elevated the importance of studying languages, it is on the rise again – going up by 21 per cent over the past four years.
Poland was the most loyal ally of Britain in the Second World War. Would you support a ban on British media falsely labelling the German concentration and death camps as being “Polish” e.g. Polish ghetto, death camps of Poland, or, Poland’s Auschwitz?
The governments of UK and Poland work closely together across a broad range of issues. For example, the Foreign Secretary visited Warsaw earlier this year to discuss issues of mutual interest such as reform of the EU and relations with Russia. The UK and Poland have been at the forefront of arguing for a strong and united response by the EU and NATO to Russian aggression in Ukraine. The RAF and the Polish air force have jointly undertaken Baltic air policing, and British and Polish forces have been training together in Poland.
We owe a huge debt to the brave Polish aircrews that fought in the RAF during World War Two. Sir Hugh Dowding, the Chief of Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain, was clear: without the remarkable contribution of Polish squadrons like 303, that crucial battle might have been lost.
Do you support promoting information about the positive contribution of Polish immigrants to the economy of the UK?
We believe Polish people have made a hugely positive contribution to the UK and we will continue to build on British-Polish relations for the benefit of both countries.
In the event of Brexit, would you support granting an unconditional Indefinite Leave To Remain to the EU citizens who have lived and worked in Britain under the freedom of movement rules?
Britain and a European renegotiation. As the Prime Minister has said, he is confident that he will secure a better deal for Britain in Europe – with immigration at the heart of this renegotiation, and changes to welfare as an absolute requirement. He will then deliver an in-out referendum by the end of 2017, so that the British people have the final say.
